Privacy policy
This is the privacy policy for SlangIt! (slang-it.com), a free online slang word game published by halfbakedgames. It describes the limited data we collect to run the game, how it's stored, and what choices you have.
Last updated: 23 April 2026.
Scope
This policy covers use of the SlangIt! website at slang-it.com, including the playable web client and the backend API that supports accounts, multiplayer games, stats, and the Slang Journal.
What we collect
When you play without an account
- Local storage / cookies for game state, settings (theme, audio), and your personal blocklist for solo / pass-and-play games. This never leaves your device unless you sign in.
- Basic request logs (IP address, user agent, timestamps) at the server and hosting layer, used for abuse prevention and uptime — retained only as long as needed.
When you sign up for an account
- A username you choose.
- A password, stored hashed (bcrypt).
- An optional email address (used for login / password reset only).
- Gameplay data tied to your account: stats, ELO rating, Slang Journal entries, friend list, game history for games you participated in.
When you play multiplayer
- Game moves (tile placements, scores) are stored on the server so opponents and you can load the game.
- WebSocket connections for live updates and turn notifications.
Analytics
SlangIt! runs a minimal first-party analytics pipeline to understand aggregate traffic (for example, how many daily visitors use the site). It does not use third-party advertising cookies or trackers. There are no ad-network scripts embedded in the site.
How we use the data
- Run games end-to-end, match players, and deliver turn notifications.
- Keep stats, the Slang Journal, and leaderboards accurate.
- Defend the service against abuse and cheating.
- Improve the game based on aggregate usage.
We do not sell your personal data.
Cookies and local storage
SlangIt! uses local storage and cookies / tokens to keep you signed in, persist your game state, remember your settings, and track session identity for multiplayer. These are essential to making the game work. You can clear them at any time from your browser's privacy settings — you will be signed out and local-only preferences will reset.
Data retention
- Account data: kept until you delete your account.
- Game history: retained indefinitely to keep leaderboards and stats honest. You can request deletion of your account data (see below).
- Server access logs: short retention (measured in days) for abuse / uptime.
Your rights
You can:
- Export or delete your account — contact us at the email below.
- Clear local game state at any time via your browser's clear-site-data controls.
- Block specific slang words from your own solo / pass-and-play games with the personal blocklist.
Children
SlangIt! is designed for a general audience. It is not directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent age in your jurisdiction). Modern slang can be edgy, and we recommend an adult take the first look before younger players use the game. Accounts are not intended for under-13 users.
Security
Passwords are stored with bcrypt, sessions use signed tokens, and all traffic runs over HTTPS. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong unique password.
Changes
We may update this policy as the game evolves. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date above.
